At some point of doing business entrepreneurs will consider whether or not to incorporate their business. This decision is an important one that requires the assistance of professionals, in particular an accountant and/or consultant. When deciding on incorporating one must consider: 1. Cost of set up; 2. Cost of continued maintenance; 3. Type of Incorporation (i.e. Federal or Provincial) 4. Share Structure, as well as several other matters. With the Saskatchewan Corporations Branch recently going on-line it has become easier and quicker to incorporate. The ease of access and use has also resulted in more individuals incorporating without assistance. While the process is not complicated and most individuals can complete the incorporation process on their own, the structure can be complicated. It has been our experience that most of the do-it-yourselfers end up coming to see us to amend the structure of the corporation they set up as the options available through online incorporation are not sufficient i.e. not enough flexibility in share types to allow for equity investments by third parties etc. These changes usually also require an accountant and end up costing the client significantly more than if the corporation would have been properly set up initially. |
